Zak Crawley Unaware of Stokes' Controversial 'Weak Men' Comments

The English opening batter Zak Crawley suggested he had no knowledge of statements made by captain Stokes about the dressing room not being "those lacking fortitude".

The all-rounder made this message in several interviews in the wake of England's loss in the second match of the Ashes series versus Australia previously.

In the lead-up to the Adelaide Test, where England now face a series loss with a match to spare, the captain stated he had allowed his sentiment to "drift around" within the playing group.

"I have completed all the talking in recent days that I required," said Stokes.

However, following Crawley scored a knock of 85 on the fourth day in Adelaide, he stated: "I didn't see that."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. We take anything stated in the media with some skepticism," he added.

Raw Conversations and Steady Philosophy

The captain made the "weak men" comment subsequent to his side suffered a loss in the second Test to fall two matches behind.

The team subsequently took a break to Noosa in the gap between the second and the upcoming Tests.

Prior to this match, Stokes said his team had held "raw" conversations and he had asked them to "display some fight" in their effort to remain alive in the Ashes battle.

Yet, Crawley asserted the guidance from the captain and head coach McCullum had remained in line with their prior tenure in charge.

"The atmosphere has been very positive, the same as always," said the opener. "The focus is just trying to be optimistic, play our way, with lots of freedom. We believed we could do an extraordinary feat going into this Test."

Australia On the Verge of Rapid Series Victory

Crawley's wicket on day four came during a crucial three-wicket burst by Australian spinner Nathan Lyon.

The spinner's triple strike in 20 deliveries – including the wickets of Harry Brook and Stokes himself – meant the chasing side 207-6 chasing a notional total of 435.

Consequently, the home team need four wickets on the final day to move to an unassailable three-nil advantage after three Tests.

Defeat would prolong the English team's drought in Australia to 18 Tests and condemn them to a fourth straight overseas Ashes defeat.

This series will be completed in just 11 days of cricket – with England fell the initial matches in rapid time each.

Not since 1921, when Australia sealed victory in the UK in eight days, has the destination of the Ashes urn been determined so quickly. The hosts have also triumphed in eleven days on two other instances in the 21st century.

"It's disappointing," admitted the batsman. "We came here to win the Ashes and we're staring down the barrel at this point."

"There will still be plenty to play for and we'll certainly approach it like that," he continued.

"It's been difficult. Australia is a formidable side. It was inevitably hard touring here against them. They were the favourites coming in to it they've proven why."

Pope's Place Under Scrutiny

Although Crawley's performance in Adelaide probably answers doubts about his short-term place in the side, Ollie Pope appears under threat for his spot in the Melbourne Test on Boxing Day.

The Surrey batsman fell for 17 in the team's second knock on Saturday, adding to his poor record against Australia.

In sixteen Ashes knocks, the Surrey man has failed to score a half-century and averages just 17.62.

A solitary other England player since 1900 – Amiss – has played as many times in the top six in the Ashes and returned a poorer average.

But, the opener said any notion Pope is under the microscope originates with "the media" – referring to the press – "not inside the camp."

"We all know how good of a player he is," added Crawley. "Ollie has enjoyed a good year to be frank."

"He has played several excellent innings. It is noise from the outside. There's no chat of that nature on Ollie in the camp," Crawley finished.
