A tragic train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel opposition criticisms regarding the rapidity and management of the country's major infrastructure initiatives.
The crash happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a line built to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was created to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.
“We will rigorously clarify what caused this incident,” affirmed the country's president.
The official confirmed that, of the some 250 passengers on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in grave condition. The president noted plans to visit Oaxaca to confer with those impacted.
Key Undertaking of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the immediate past president, whose presidency finished the prior year. This rail line was closely associated with his government's economic agenda for the southeastern region.
Another ambitious train initiative from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the broader strategy to stimulate the economic fortunes of a comparatively poorer part of the country.
Building Management and Worries
The development of both railway systems was managed by the army, marking a dramatic increase of its responsibilities in civilian infrastructure. They were completed at an rapid rate, defying expectations to be partially opened before the end of that presidency.
However, this accelerated timeline had simultaneously raised persistent concerns over safety standards.
- Sunday's accident was the third event on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This encompasses an earlier accident this month when a train hit a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen several non-deadly derailments.
Appeals for Investigation and Halt
In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the leader of a major opposition party urged an urgent suspension in the development and management of all comparable projects.
This halt was requested while awaiting a comprehensive technical review. The party stated that the tragedy "demands immediate answers."
In reply, the national leader maintained that the train had been running in full accordance with all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would continue to be "responsible" in both the construction and operation of these strategic projects.
